"Erdogan expected to approach Annan in Davos
By Jean Christou
TURKISH Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is expected to take the first steps towards resumption of Cyprus talks with UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos later this month, Turkish papers reported yesterday.
Erdogan will attend the forum between January 26 and 30 and will ask Annan for restart of a goodwill mission to open the way to a solution, according to Zaman.
Sources close to Erdogan say he will ask for a plan incorporating a solution, whether it is a reactivation of the former plan or a new one. The Prime Minister will insist on starting the process before October 3 2005, the date when the negotiations between Turkey and the European Union will begin, the paper said.
Last years round of talks that ultimately led to the referendum in which Greek Cypriots rejected the Annan plan was also initiated by Erdogan almost exactly a year ago, again in Davos. Erdogan will re-express to Annan his view that having no solution is not the solution in Cyprus.
The Turkish side has done whatever it could, but the isolation is still continuing despite this, it added.
Annan has indicated that he is keen to broker a solution for Cyprus but all sides are waiting for the Greek Cypriot side to make its intentions clear.
President Tassos Papadopoulos will pay a two-day working visit to Athens between January 25 and 26, at the invitation of Greek Premier Costas Karamanlis.
There will be a review of the current situation on Cyprus and the latest developments, an official press release said."
