ISTANBUL: With the decision on when and how Turkey will join the EU to be taken today, the prime movers in Turkey's burgeoning arts scene have opened the country's first dedicated museum of modern art.
Housed in an enormous converted warehouse tucked away behind an ancient mosque in Istanbul's historic port area of Karakoy, the Istanbul Modern is nothing if not impressive.
It isn't just the enormous size of the museum which at 8,000 square meters dwarfs every other permanent art exhibition space in the country, or the high standard of the conversion that has served to create a truly world class exhibition space, or even that the museum's 100- meter-long terrace offers jaw-dropping views across the mouth of the Bosporus and the Sea of Marmara to the ancient Ottoman Topkapi Palace. "
