By SONER CAGAPTAY
FROM TODAY'S WALL STREET JOURNAL EUROPE
July 8, 2008
The jailing of two retired Turkish generals over the weekend has heightened tensions between the government in Ankara and its critics. The generals are among 21 people whom police have detained over the past week, including a senior industrialist and a prominent journalist, on suspicion of plotting a coup against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government. Interestingly, the interrogations occurred as the chief prosecutor appeared before the constitutional court to make his case that the AKP be shut down for violating the state's official secularism."

"The Big Question: Why is tension rising in Turkey, and is the country turning Islamist?
By Nicholas Birch in Istanbul
Tuesday, 8 July 2008
Why are we asking this now?
For Turkey's more radical secularists, there is a war going on between the defenders of Kemalism – the mix of authoritarian secularism, statism and nationalism that is still Turkey's official ideology – and a government intent on imposing Islam on the country. The AKP government insists the struggle is between democrats and defenders of an outdated authoritarian political vision. Cynics see a battle between two sides linked by their obsession with controlling the state apparatus and their cavalier attitude to democracy. "

1 -Article 301 of Turkish Penal Code
A - Introduction of Issue
Man in developed countries have some inalienable basic rights that have a very important role in their lives. Freedom of speech is basic one. In fact, because freedom of speech leads societies to improve, it is seen as an opportunity for the public in developed countries. In Turkey, there is a highly controversial regulation named article 301 that is related to freedom of speech. It is article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, law no 5237. Article 301 regulated by the penal code in 1936 and has been changed seven times up to now. It was regulated as Article 159 of the previous penal code. This article consists of four clauses, and was introduced with the legislative reforms of 1 June 2005 and replaced Article 159 of the old penal code. Because some writers and journalists have been prosecuted under this law so far, it is being widely debated in Turkey and throughout Europe."

Evidence of a conspiracy to overthrow the pro-Western Islamist government has laid bare the resentment of the country's secular elite in a divided country, reports Robert Tait in Istanbul

Judging by the events of last week, it is the last arrow - revolution - that has preoccupied the more radical in recent months."

Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that the Turkish police had arrested two retired generals, the head of Ankara’s main business lobby and 21 others affiliated with an ultra-right wing group in a failed coup plot against the Turkish government.
Military takeovers in Turkey were part of the political landscape for years but, if I remember correctly, they were normally restricted to the highest ranks of the active duty Turkish armed forces. They were usually successful. They only occurred when actions by civilian politicians threatened to destroy the country and, as a consequence, they also had considerable popular support."

Cypriot journalist Sevgul Uludag wins Courage in Journalism Award
"Cypriot journalist Sevgul Uludag wins Courage in Journalism Award
Turkish Cypriot journalist Sevgul Uludag and Afghan journalist Farida Nekzad have both won this year’s International Women's Media Foundation Courage in Journalism Award. Both journalists who strive for a free press have both been the target of intimidation, attacks and the recipient of death threats. Sevgul Uludag 49 continues to report stories that reveal the truth about events in her tense country - Cyprus. An investigative reporter for Yeniduzen newspaper in Cyprus, Uludag has been a journalist for nearly three decades. In 2002, she began writing about missing people and mass graves in Cyprus. Her reporting started a public debate about the issue of missing people and mass graves and led to official searches and exhumations. Uludag lives in the northern part of divided Cyprus but through her reporting attempts to ease the segregation between the Greek and Turkish communities. In doing so, she has faced many obstacles, including death threats and violent attacks. In April 2003, the daily paper Volkan, mouthpiece of the nationalist movement, pronounced threats of murder against Uludag and called upon readers to "cut off the tongue of Sevgul Uludag." But neither hate campaigns nor psychological terror keep Uludag from publishing her articles."
