EUROPA - Seminar on Equal opportunities for men and women in Turkey

"Seminar on Equal opportunities for men and women in Turkey
Ankara, 6 March 2006

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am very pleased that you have been able to attend this important seminar focusing on the main challenges of gender equality in Turkey.

Accession negotiations with Turkey were opened last October. The issue of equal opportunities is an essential component in your country’s preparations for future EU accession. The timing of my visit also reflects the importance which the European Commission attaches to this issue, as a date close to International Women’s Day was deliberately chosen.

The question of equal rights for men and women is also of importance to me personally. I fully share the views of the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who said: “If a society does not march towards its goal with all its women and men together, it is impossible for it to progress”.

I regard his words as evidence of his brilliant, visionary mind. After all, at that time there were not many people anywhere in the world who thought as he did. And yet modern history has proved him right: without women, without their knowledge, skills and experience, the economic growth and development of the last few decades in Europe would not have been possible."

"Bidders line up for $3bn Turkish bank

By Ben Marlow
05 March 2006

EUROPEAN banks are scrambling to draw up bids for Turkey’s Denizbank, one of the country’s most attractive remaining private banks. Denizbank has appointed US investment house JP Morgan to explore strategic options, which a number of European banks have taken as an invite to launch bids.

Those thought to be examining Denizbank hardest are Italy’s Banca Intesa and France’s Société Générale, both of which have lost out to rivals in other recent bank auctions in Turkey. The battle to buy Denizbank, which is valued at about $3bn (E2.5bn, £1.7bn), is expected to be particularly competitive as the list of banks being sold in Turkey is likely to run out in the next 18 months. There are still several European players keen to establish a presence in the country that have been unlucky in previous auctions."

There are still reforms to be made in the European Union (EU) to reap fully the benefits of the Single Market. There are still barriers in the European Union for the free movement of services. "...Princeton, N.J.: A high probability scenario seems to be that our troops are withdrawn from Iraq within a year and the country falls into chaos-civil war, what have you. I think we should at least be thinking about this. Some questions:

1. Will Turkey invade the North?

2. Will Iran invade the South?

3. What will happen to Baghdad?

Dana Priest: If the scenario plays out, then yes on one and two unless we can get some sort of deal going now--which is probably more likely in the north than with Iran. Since Turkey still wants to be considered a good actor in the European context. Iran is much more problematic. They may well believe a war is inevitable, but they will eventually win a section, so it will be worth it. Baghdad, under that scenario, would eventually go to the Iranian/Shiites too unless we see the Sunni neighboring states jumping in and then, who knows. But it's the worst case scenario and right now it does not seem out of the question, unfortunately."

JTW Article - Book Review: The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey, A Disputed Genocide

"Book Review: The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey, A Disputed Genocide
Fatih BALCI and Arif AKGUL

There could be some mistakes in the history, but it should be more objective to enlighten those mistaken events with the helping of the historians. Guenter Lewy’s book, The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey, A Disputed Genocide, mainly focuses on the massacres in Ottoman Turkey, and he strongly stands on the way of the truths which he finds from the historical documents. After all, he mentions that trustfully the deaths of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey can not be called “genocide”. There were some deaths but they can not be called as genocide. For calling genocide, it is needed to have a look at the definition of genocide which is mostly accepted to intention to annihilation of one group. To use or say genocide for an event it has to involve an intention of annihilation. In the Armenian case the main aim was not based on the intention of Armenian annihilation. The only thing was deporting· the Armenians from some places only for security purposes, because the Armenians became a big problem for the Turks during World War I with the rebellions and armed guerillas inside the country."

"TURKEY’S ACCESSION PROCESS

Michael Lake

Former EU Ambassador in

Turkey (1991-98)

Hungary (1998-2001)

The last few months have been among the most important in the life of the Turkish Republic since its founding in 1923 – 82 years ago. In recent years Turkey has been increasingly preoccupied with joining the European Union, to the point where it was on the verge of opening formal negotiations on 3rd October. This point, this long weekend of 30 hours negotiations – not with Turkey but within the European Union itself – was the most dangerous moment of the entire process since Turkey signed a Treaty of Association back in 1963. Failure would have been a setback for Europe. I do not doubt it would have thrown into confusion and doubt the accession prospects of more recent candidates and would-be candidates in the western Balkans."
