As the capital of one of the world’s first large empires, the Hittite city of Hattuşaş was right beside what is now the modern village of Boğazkale. Becaause of its strategically central location, fertile land and abundant water supply, the area was very attractive first to the Hattis and then to the Hittites. Best known for their wars, laws, and successful trade relationships, the Hittites not only left their mark on history, but actually recorded it on clay tablets, shedding invaluable light on the distant past. Other Hittite remains can be seen at Yazılıkaya and Alacahöyük. Together, they make up one of Turkey’s UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Sites"
