The spectacle of senior military figures being detained in their dozens and charged with plotting to overthrow an elected government would be dramatic in any country – but in Turkey it is doubly shocking. The military's role as protector of the country's secular traditions has seen it depose several elected regimes; for the politicians to have the courage (and the power) to strike back is unprecedented."
