"Turkey's demons
So Dirk Muench and Alexa Winnik of London (Letters, Sept. 9) are dismayed to find that their preconceptions about what is going on in the Middle East are not shared in Turkey.
Istanbul, however, happens to be somewhat closer than London to where the action is and a great deal closer to the region's worries, resentments and fears.
To ignore that fact, and to look upon Turkish public opinion as merely subject to the manipulations of 'political and religious leaders' who can be brought to heel by threats, is to display exactly the kind of naïve and murderous arrogance that is making the United States and its allies hated throughout the world.
