"TURKEY: PARLIAMENT DEBATES OPENING PRIVATE SCHOOLS

Istanbul, 26 Sept. (AKI) - The Turkish Parliament on Tuesday was starting debate on a highly controversial bill involving the opening of private schools. The main opposition Republican party CHP insists that the bill, part of a European Union-inspired reform package, would allow the reopening of a Greek Orthodox seminary, closed for 35 years. While both the EU and the US want the seminary to be reactivated, nationalist parties and some Islamic groups claim it would be the first step towards making Istanbul a centre of Greek Orthodoxy."
