Istanbul. At an Eisenhower foundation conference that was held in Istanbul on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks it was said that Turkey plays a very important role in the constantly increasing gap between the East and the West, online edition of Radikal newspaper reads today.
It was pointed out that Turkey’s accession would reinforce the European Union and that the country would be a source of inspiration to the Middle East countries. Meanwhile it was noted that the Turkish government must take the necessary steps in some areas like the respect of the minorities’ religious freedoms and the guarantee of the freedom of mind, the newspaper notes.
