SINGAPORE -(Dow Jones)- Turkey's bid to join the European Union enjoys strong - albeit 'silent' - support from leaders in the 25-country area, the country's Economy Minister and chief negotiator for Turkey with the E.U. said Monday.
'We have the very strong, silent support of political leaders and opinion leaders,' Ali Babacan told a seminar here on the political future of Europe.
Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country, has run into strong opposition from public opinion in Europe, which is predominantly Christian, in its bid to join the E.U. Some European political leaders, including Nicolas Sarkozy, the man expected by many to be next president of France, have been outspoken in opposing Turkey's E.U. aspirations. "
