FOR the first time in four decades, Turkish Cypriots were yesterday facing the possibility of a political future without a Denktash.
In a move that could mark the end of the Dentash era, the ruling Republican Turkish Party (CTP) yesterday handed in its resignation, thereby dissolving a two-and-a-half year-old alliance between itself and smaller coalition partner the Democrat Party (DP), led by Serdar Denktash, son of former Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. Rauf Denktash dominated Turkish Cypriot politics for almost 40 years before standing down after he failed to persuade his community to reject the UN’s Annan plan for the reunification of Cyprus in 2004. Since then, his son Serdar has represented the Denktash name and ideals.
