"Turkey: Rejects US guidance in Iran talks

15:31 - 04 May 2006 - The Foreign Ministry, through its spokesman Namik Tan, has emphatically rejected the idea that Ankara has been conducting talks with Iranian officials under the guidance of the United States.

“We don't schedule our visits according to inspiration or advice from any country. If we consider it necessary, we make every kind of visit and we also meet with everybody,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Namik Tan said yesterday during a weekly press conference when he asked whether Israel and the United States had suggested that it would be better if Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not hold a meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad when they both attend the annual summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) scheduled for tomorrow in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.

On Monday, Erdogan will meet another senior Iranian official, Ali Larijani, the country's top nuclear negotiator, in Ankara."
