THE VERSION OF TURKISH ISLAM: MORE MENACING THAN OTHERS - by Dr. Christos Evangeliou Professor of Philosophy Towson University, USA

The European Union, in spite of its new and nice name, will probably remain at least politically “disunited” well into the future. This is basically due to the fact that, unlike the United States of America, the European Union is made up mainly of member states with long histories, great traditions, national prides, and diverse political and economic interests. Also, in spite of its considerable economic power and the strength of the euro relative to American dollar, the EU lacks at the present, and for the foreseeable future the military might to challenge or even counter-balance the US as a global power. Apparently, only if the EU was to court seriously and effectively Russia, a country rich in natural resources and Christian in religion, instead of courting precariously Turkey, a populous, poor Muslim country, it might be possible for it to unify Europe politically at some point in the future. With such farseeing policy the EU could acquire the status of a truly great power on the global scene with serious hegemonic aspirations. The irony here is that NATO, this relic of the Cold War era with its powerful and omnipresent structure, that secured the freedom of Europe for half a century from the communist threat, can frustrate any EUmoves in the direction of emancipation for the foreseeable future.in spite of its secular appearance, democratic pretension, and European aspiration, Turkey remains at core a Muslim country that is fundamentally different from Christian Europe.
