We're in the awards season, and following the Baftas, Oscars and Crufts comes my nomination for travel-writing cliché of the year. It's that adjective 'undiscovered', usually paired with 'gem', 'cove' or 'corner'.

How ironic that the more it's trotted out, the harder it becomes to find somewhere off the tourist radar.

But last summer I found somewhere that came pretty close: the Datça Peninsula, which stretches south towards the islands of Rhodes and Symi, about 20 miles west of Marmaris on Turkey's Mediterranean coast."
