Brussels/Nicosia 8 March 2005: The failure of the Annan Plan to reunify Cyprus – accepted by Turkish Cypriots by a large majority but rejected by Greek Cypriots in the 2004 referendum – has left the island’s peace process locked in stagnation.
The International Crisis Group’s latest report, The Cyprus Stalemate: What Next?,* explores the roots of the current political and diplomatic impasse and ways to escape it. While noting understandable concerns of the Greek Cypriots with aspects of the Annan plan, it expresses concern about the uncompromising attitudes of the present Republic of Cyprus government and its unhelpful blocking role in the EU."
