The ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, since its landslide election victory in November 2002, vigorously led Turkeys drive toward the European Union. As Turkey set on the road of the European Union and took the route of accession after turning the sharp curves of Dec. 17, 2003 and last Oct. 3, the militarys weight in the political sphere had begun to dwindle. Last week, the row created by the Semdinli indictment has been like a boomerang. The military is back in the political arena with its acknowledged weight. It has retaken lost political ground."
