"Kretschmer highlights Turkey's homework in EU bid

European Commission Representative to Turkey Ambassador Hansjoerg Kretschmer listed Turkey's homework to join the 25-nation bloc on Thursday, giving top priority to the fulfillment of obligations before 2014.
Kretschmer made the remarks during his speech at a conference sponsored by the Kadir Has University in Istanbul, entitled 'Turkish-European Union Relations after October 3, 2005.'
Underlining that all European Union members must fulfill certain political and economic criteria, Kretschmer said, 'More freedom, more human rights and more democracy are needed by member states.' "
