The New Anatolian-EU pact sparks sovereignty debate

"EU pact sparks sovereignty debate

TNA Parliament Bureau / Ankara

Parliament's Foreign Affairs Commission on Thursday refused to approve a pact between the government and the European Union, saying that it violated Turkey's sovereignty.

The Draft Law on the Adoption of the First Additional Protocol to the Agreement Establishing Central Finance and Contracts Unit (CFCU) sparked heated debate at a meeting of the commission yesterday.

Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Deputy Onur Oymen criticized the draft agreement as being against Turkey's sovereignty. 'This new unit will be under Turkey's Treasury,' he said. 'But it's not clear why. Under the agreement, the EU is going to pay the salary of state officials. I can't accept that. This is against our sovereignty. The EU cannot pay the salary of our officials.'"
