ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News

The European Union will spend a projected 14 billion euros annually on agriculture after 2007, with a country average of 2 billion euros allocated to agricultural expenditures in the budget, said a study released yesterday by the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen's Association (TÜSIAD).The report said Turkey's agricultural budget of approximately one billion euros will make it difficult to proceed with the planned reforms in the sector and therefore harmonize with EU agricultural standards. The need for greater research and development in Turkey's inflated agricultural sector is needed to make production more efficient, said the report titled Turkish Agriculture in Light of the Developments of the European Union and the World Trade Organization.Currently, agriculture accounts for 28 percent of employment in Turkey, while average employment figures for agriculture in European Union countries fall between five and 10 percent. Turkey also needs to develop its rural credit program that offers credit to small farms, the report said."
