ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News
Turkey's geothermal energy potential could heat up to 5 million homes, according to a study released by the government's Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration. The news comes as Turkey searches for alternative fuel sources that would lessen the country's dependence on foreign heating fuels, such as natural gas. Earlier this year shipments from Russia and Iran were reduced dramatically, highlighting the need for a stable supply of heating fuel. New plans to develop domestic resources have led to talks with the United States regarding plans to build a nuclear reactor. Other plans include investment in biofuels and Turkey's network of dams."
