Cyprus notes Turkish ''fierce reaction'' to EU statement

Nicosia, Sep 22 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides spoke of a ''fierce reaction'' on behalf of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots to the content of the EU counterstatement in response to a declaration issue by Ankara that it did not recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

''There is a fierce reaction on behalf of Turkey for the counterstatement,'' he said, adding that the counterstatement and Ankara's negotiating framework ''have the same political and legal importance and it is impossible to separate them.''

Turkey's EU quest gains favour in Mideast

Often the odd man out in the Middle East, Turkey's drive to join the European Union might push it even further out of step with its Arab and Muslim neighbours. But if it succeeds, they may well applaud.

Many Muslims, like some Europeans, view the EU as a "Christian club". Admitting Turkey, a predominantly Muslim nation of 72 million, would erode if not shatter this image. "It would send a message to the Arab world that a Muslim country can also become a part of Europe," Abdel Raouf el-Reedy, chairman of the Egyptian Council on Foreign Relations, said. He offered broad reasons why the Middle East should pay close attention to the process.

WASHINGTON - Exclusive by TDN Defense Desk

Turkey's relationship with the United States, already damaged by disputes over Iraq, may deteriorate at an unprecedented rate in the event the U.S. House of Representatives approves two 'Armenian genocide' resolutions passed by a house panel last week, Turkish diplomats warned."

Athens expressed its delight yesterday with the final version of the counter-declaration that sets out criteria for Turkey's EU membership process but a last-gasp objection from Nicosia prevented the document being adopted.
The statement, which was agreed on in principle by the 25 member states, is expected to be formally approved today. After marathon negotiations, Greece is satisfied that its goals have been achieved"

IFC Helps Expand Gas Distribution in Turkey

The International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has signed an agreement with Palmet Metal Endüstri ve Ticaret A.ª. in Turkey to provide $12 million for its gas distribution activities. This is IFC’s first financing of a company in Turkey’s natural gas distribution sector.

IFC’s financing package consists of a $5 million loan to Palmet’s subsidiary operating in Gebze, Palgaz Doðalgaz Daðitim Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Þ. (Palgaz); a $2 million loan to Palmet’s subsidiary operating in Erzurum, Palen Enerji Doðalgaz Daðýtým Endüstri ve Ticaret A.Þ. (Palen); and a $5 million standby loan for future concessions. The proceeds of these loans will be used to fund the subsidiaries’ gas network expansion programs.

Established in 1984, Palmet’s main activities include IT and telecommunications infrastructure, high-precision air conditioning manufacturing, raised access floor manufacturing, and, most recently, natural gas distribution. Palmet has captured a significant market niche in the telecommunications areas and has worked with all major sector players in Turkey, including service providers and equipment suppliers.

Palmet made a strategic decision to invest in Turkey’s gas distribution sector six years ago, with a view to diversifying into a regulated utility business and to leveraging the close links to international contractors and utility service providers that it has established through its telecommunications work.

Turkey Has To Make 50 Billion Euro Investment In Environment

''Turkey has to make investments worth 50 billion Euro in environment within the framework of adjustment to European Union (EU),'' Turkish Environment and Forestry Ministry Undersecretary Hasan Zuhuri Sarikaya said on Wednesday.
''Turkish-French Colloquium on Environment'', where experiences of Turkey and France would be exchanged in urban and industrial areas, has started today.

Sarikaya said there were many investments Turkey should do during the process of adjustment to the EU, and noted that public and private sectors and the municipalities need sources to make investments in this area.

''The ministry is responsible for the coordination. Local administrations should act together to upgrade the quality of services,'' he noted.

Cyprus satisfied with EU statement on Turkey

The Cypriot government on Wednesday expressed satisfaction with an agreement reached in Brussels on the content of the EU counterstatement to the Turkish unilateral declaration of non-recognition of the Republic of Cyprus.

Government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said the importance of the counterstatement must not be underestimated.

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos also expressed satisfaction late Tuesday evening with the counterstatement, which will pave the way for the start of accession talks with Ankara on Oct. 3.

Speaking to reporters at Larnaca Airport upon his return from New York, where he addressed the UN General Assembly, Papadopoulos said that main aims of Cyprus concerning the counterstatement have been fulfilled.

The agreement between EU member Cyprus, which insists that Turkey recognize its government ahead of the membership talks, and Britain, the current EU presidency, was tabled early on Wednesday at a meeting of the 25 EU ambassadors.

"It seems that today we reached a satisfactory conclusion," Chrysostomides told the press.

Battle on Istanbul beaches reflects class warfare in a changing land

ISTANBUL - The Turkish language has two words for underwear.

Kulot, pronounced like the word for pants-skirt, is actually French, and as such, snugly captures the delicate sensibilities, urbane airs and consuming aspirations of Turks who see themselves as Europeans. Known as "white Turks," they have long held sway in this beautiful city that stands half in Europe, half in Asia. By bridging the two, Istanbul has defined cosmopolitanism for a millennium."

"Defying Swiss police, Perincek addresses Armenian conference
Lausanne - Attempts yesterday by Swiss police to block Workers' Party (IP) leader Dogu Perincek from holding a conference on the so-called Armenian genocide were unsuccessful.

It was learned that prior to Perincek's arrival to the hall to address the conference, Swiss police warned him not to deny the so-called Armenian genocide. If Perincek speaks about the controversial issue and this includes an element of crime, as defined by Swiss law, this would be added to the ongoing investigation on him. "

Talat anger at EU declaration

"Talat anger at EU declaration
By Simon Bahceli

TURKISH Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday expressed disappointment at the EU’s response to Turkey’s Cyprus declaration, made upon its signing of the customs union with Cyprus and nine other EU newcomers in July, saying the EU was inadvertently preventing a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Turkey’s declaration insisted that despite signing the customs union, it was not willing to recognise the Cyprus government’s jurisdiction over the whole of the island. The EU responded late on Monday night by calling on Turkey formally to recognise the Republic of Cyprus at some point during the accession process."
