TURKISH Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday expressed disappointment at the EU’s response to Turkey’s Cyprus declaration, made upon its signing of the customs union with Cyprus and nine other EU newcomers in July, saying the EU was inadvertently preventing a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Turkey’s declaration insisted that despite signing the customs union, it was not willing to recognise the Cyprus government’s jurisdiction over the whole of the island. The EU responded late on Monday night by calling on Turkey formally to recognise the Republic of Cyprus at some point during the accession process."
