It was Frank Lloyd Wright who first made me want to visit Istanbul. In 1985, when I was working on a history of Milwaukee's Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, I learned that Wright's inspiration for the landmark was Hagia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Wisdom, in Turkey's cultural capital. The building was, in Wright's view, the "greatest remaining example" of Byzantine architecture, a glorious structure that "grappled earth forcefully with simple purpose and complete individuality.""
