A lawyer says the Turkish man who shot Pope John Paul II nearly 29 years ago has left his luxury hotel in the capital and is traveling to Istanbul.

Mehmet Ali Agca, 52, was released from prison Monday after completing a sentence in Turkey for killing journalist Abdi Ipekci in 1979. He spent his first night of freedom at a five-star hotel."
