ISTANBUL | Zam. That’s the word used in Turkey for an increase in the price of a service, like electricity, natural gas, or most recently, taxi fares.
The city of Istanbul last week raised the starting rate for a cab ride from 2 Turkish lira to 2.5 lira, or about $1.35 to $1.69. The distance rate also rose, to 1.4 lira per kilometer. The fare for a shared minivan called a dolmus, a common mode of transport between the Asian and European sides of the city, rose 10 percent (those prices vary according to destination)."
