"Turkey playing hard ball, Russia to take EU and Indian markets?

Analysis

Turkey and Russia have signed an agreement in Ankara by which Russia will be allowed to build part of the South Stream pipeline beneath Turkish waters in the Black Sea. The deal comes just a month after that European leaders have signed an agreement for the Nabucco gas pipeline project, which is meant to deliver non-Russian gas volumes from the Middle East and Caspian region. Turkey is slated to be one of the main beneficiaries of this pan-European project. However, it seems now that Ankara, possibly annoyed by continuing delays in its European membership project to play hard ball with Brussels and partly to play the Russian card. European analysts have warned before that Turkey could be playing both sides, but until now no real threat to Europe's energy supplies were put in place. The signing of the South Stream project is however a direct threat to energy security of the EU, as it will give Moscow another option to force Brussels to take more Russian gas or gas transported via Russian soil."
