Turkish women: in danger for the new Constitution?

"Turkish women: in danger for the new Constitution? Thursday, 4 October 2007 turkey_feminists More shakes and polemics over Turkey. And more apologies to give to the European Union from a country that has already got many diplomatic problems (Turkey still denies the Armenian genocide). A few days ago the problem was the Prime Minister's call to lift the ban on women wearing headscarves at state universities. Today it is for the new Constitution treating women 'as a vulnerable group needing protection'. Those about the Constitution draft are just rumors, but they are enough to concern national feminist groups, that decided to rally for their rights and to form a 'Constitution Women's Platform'. In facts, the present Constitution, introduced after a 1980 military coup, talks about equality of rights amongst the citizens, independently from language, race, skin color, gender, political opinions and philosophical and religious beliefs. While the new one, according to the rumors, will introduce an ambiguous article saying that policies to protect women, children, the old and the handicapped should not be interpreted as a violation of the principle of equality. 'We don't need protection - Turkish women claimed - We need equality and ask for that'."
