This week I was going to write about the misery of a political opposition in Turkey that does not offer any viable option for people to lean on as they move away from the AKP. However, I wanted to finish off the argument I started last week on secularism and the fundamental error of those 'secularists' who committed suicide due to their ignorance of sociological realities and global currents alike. Here is what I want to say: The founders of the Republic of Turkey adopted secularism as one of the fundamental tenets of a new regime that owed nothing to a past that is represented as a history or a dynasty (Ottoman) or, for that matter, a belief system (Islam). They built the legitimacy of the new regime on popular will, which was also the source of their power (1923). "
