Adjoining airspace does not necessarily make good neighbours. On May 23, a Turkish fighter jet crashed into a Greek fighter that had been dispatched to intercept it because, as Greece said, it violated Greek airspace above the island Karpathos in the Aegean Sea.

The incident caused the death of a Greek pilot, while the Turkish one was slightly injured."
