"Babacan says secularism debate is officiousness
Ali Babacan, Turkey's chief negotiator in the European Union-Turkey membership talks, who was accused of removing a reference to secularism from a Turkish position paper, expressed his woes on the headline-making debate yesterday.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Babacan acknowledged that he had indeed taken out a sentence which read, 'The Turkish education system is secular,' but gave the following justification:"
