"Turks could consider piecemeal deals on Cyprus problem

A STEP-by-step approach to solving the Cyprus problem was not being ruled out by certain elements in the Turkish Cypriot administration yesterday after rumours over the weekend that the Greek Cypriot side might be willing to ratify EU proposals for direct trade with the north in return for the return of the fenced off town of Varosha.
“We are not against discussing specific issues – such as Varosha – and solving them piecemeal, but only if both sides make it clear they are both seeking the same eventual outcomes,” a source close to the Turkish Cypriot administration told the Cyprus Mail yesterday. The source added that in agreeing on an eventual outcome, the Annan plan should be used “as a reference, not the bible”."
