JTW Interview - An Austrian look at the Turkish image in Europe

"An Austrian look at the Turkish image in Europe

This week our guest is from Austria, Dr. Kerstin Tomenendal. She studied at Vienna University, and her undergraduate studies were on Arabic, Turcology, and Islamic theology, after which she got her Master’s on the Belkis-Suleyman legend in Arab literature. She earned her Ph.D. in history, and her thesis was on “Turkey’s Image in World War I Propaganda.” Now she serves on the faculty of Ankara’s Turkish Union and Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) University lecturing on history. Dr. Tomenendal evaluated the Turkish image in Europe and also shared her opinions on recent political and cultural issues. Here’s what she had to say to us:

TNA: As an expert on the history of Turks, have you had a chance to read the popular book of Turgut Ozakman, “Those Crazy Turks”?

TOMENENDAL: No, it’s a shame that I haven’t read it yet, but it’s very interesting to see such a history book on the shelves of almost every supermarket. In Austria you would never see this. I believe this means that Turks are very interested in their history. "
