"Consider Turkey's EU Membership As Probable, Westmacott
TOKAT - ``I consider Turkey`s European Union (EU) membership as probable. It is very normal that there are some other members who don`t want this. Certainly there will be,`` British Ambassador in Ankara Peter Westmacott said on Saturday.
Westmacott and his wife visited Acting Mayor of eastern Black Sea city of Tokat Sami Dutoglu within the scope of his tour to cities in the region.
Speaking about Turkey`s EU membership, Westmacott said he wanted to learn whether people of the region were positive or negative toward the EU membership.
Westmacott said his country advocated Turkey in EU process, and noted that, ``I am optimistic about future. I see Turkey`s EU membership as probable. What you should do is to support this process. I believe that the EU will assist you in overcoming environmental problems. There are people who think positively about Turkey. There may be negative point of views because of the incidents in Europe.``
Stating that political climate in the EU was difficult, Westmacott said, ``Turkey should work more for membership particularly in EU`s enlargement process.``"
