Yerevan, 20 February 2006 (Armenpress - website) - EU Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner said today in Yerevan the region of the South Caucasus would make an economic breakthrough if its conflicts were settled.

Speaking to a joint news conference with Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian she said the OSCE Minsk group should not slow down the process of the resolution of the Karabakh conflict. Oskanian in turn argued that the process of European integration pursued by the three South Caucasian nations may build a good basis for settlement of regional conflicts and secondly, the European Union may help the conflicting parties to solve security problems once the conflicts end.

Concerning Turkish-Armenian relations Waldner said that one of the requirements that will guide Turkey's progress in preparing for accession is included in the negotiating framework and explicitly refers to 'Turkey's unequivocal commitment to good neighborly relations and its undertaking to resolve any outstanding border disputes in conformity with the peaceful settlement of disputes."
