Turkey's negotiations for entry to the European Union opened on 3 October 2005. But it’s not a done deal, says Fadi Hakura: an arduous road lies ahead before Turkish membership can be assured.
3 October 2005 will be remembered as a momentous occasion in the tortuous tango between the European Union and Turkey. That day, the EU foreign ministers agreed collectively on the text of the “negotiating framework” laying the ground rules for the conduct of the EU-Turkey accession negotiations, thus paving the way for the opening of these negotiations."
