Turkey’s travails continued last week, as the latest round of coalition talks between Justice and Development Party (AKP) leader Ahmet Davutoglu and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli concluded on August 17 without success. Davutoglu officially returned the mandate to form a government to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the following day, who declared early elections five days ahead of the constitutional deadline to form government, denying the runner-up Republican People’s Party (CHP) the mandate to conduct coalition talks.
