Tiptoeing through the tulips in Turkey
Tulips are found everywhere in Turkey, growing in gardens and in Turkish art. Although many associate the tulips with Holland, they were brought from Turkey to Holland in 1593.

“California!”
Surprised, I look up to see a spice merchant in Istanbul’s bazaar shouting at me, smiling and gesticulating wildly across the hall. At least an hour and many labyrinths ago — easy to do in a complex of more than 4,000 shops — we spoke briefly when I glanced at his wares and he asked where I lived.
