Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish prime minister who towers over his country’s politics, was on barnstorming form. “The sleeping giant has awoken,” he declared before a meeting of business executives in Istanbul in September. “Our economy is no longer fragile ... We have carried our country to a new level.”
