Orinda couple visit underwater city in Turkey

It wasn't the melting of polar ice caps that caused the flooding of Kekova, Turkey, as was the basis of Kevin Costner's "Waterwold" movie. It was a volcano eruption that caused the sea level to rise, flooding the city.

That's what Jon and Lisa Steele learned as they kayaked over the underwater city with Guide Güvenç Duman from Ekomarin Sea Kayak Center. To celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, the Orinda couple had traveled to Turkey with Sacramento friends Todd and Betsy Stone. Turkey was high on everyone's bucket list as it offered dramatic landscape, interesting culture, intriguing food, hospitable people and history.
