Mohammad S. Shakir: Five reasons Israel should mend fences with Turkey

On May 29, 2010, dozens of Israeli naval commandoes descended on Mavi Marmara, a Turkish flag-ship carrying humanitarian supplies for the besieged residents of Gaza. Israeli action was widely condemned; and Turkey was furious.
The ill-advised Israeli raid cost nine lives, including eight Turkish citizens. But the most important casualty was the loss of a 500-year-old bond of friendship between the Turkish people and Jews.
No nation in history has been more kind and benevolent to Jews than the Turks.
