Defence analyst Anthony Tucker-Jones reports on Turkey's limited options in dealing with its troubled neighbour
Turkey as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's only Muslim member has long had to balance national self-interest with its loyalty to the alliance. Certainly Turkish pragmatism means that NATO membership is seen as just one aspect of the country's foreign policy in the Middle East. Since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Turkey is no longer on the frontline and reliant on NATO to safeguard its integrity. The result is that Ankara has been testing the alliance's cohesion thanks to its growing confidence and assertiveness."
