Turkish ambassadors attending an annual conference in the eastern city of Erzurum and millions of Turks watching the televised event were shocked with the bluntness of visiting Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou last week, as if it was the first time they’d heard a Greek prime minister criticizing Turkey’s continued military presence in northern Cyprus and warning Ankara that if it wanted a place in the European Union Turks should bear in mind that “Turkey's European course will not be completed as long as the occupation [referring to the Turkish military presence in Turkish Cypriot-administered northern Cyprus] continues.”"
