Turks run on gas

"Turks run on gas

A candidate I interviewed last week told me this. I loved this expression. “Gaz vermek.” “Giving gas” in Turkish slang. Like in many other languages, it means motivating someone to overachieve by picking up the right words of encouragement. This may be a one of the most common denominators between southern cultures like Turkey. The only northern country which this works also to a great extent is the U.S. Patriotic talk always works in these cultures. If you hype the public, they do not rationalize much and don’t try to learn the facts behind the statements as long as you give them gas. That’s why American companies are very good in motivation meetings. At least once a year they get most of the employees together and tell them with various means how good their products, company and employees are. You get goose bumps while watching the videos and hearing emotional speeches. The dangerous part of this method is that people in the company get so fulfilled by their company that they often forget about the competition or start underestimating its power."
