Turkey: Be Afraid

"Turkey: Be Afraid
posted at 5:48 pm on February 28, 2010 by J.E. Dyer

The news of the last week from Turkey should worry us. More than 50 military officers, some of them among the nation’s most senior, have been arrested in the government’s ongoing investigation of the so-called “Ergenekon” conspiracy. That investigation, underway since 2007, long ago surpassed the alleged conspiracy in its heroic scope, having detained an increasingly unbelievable array of journalists, teachers, artists, jurists, students, businessmen, and soldiers alongside the occasional genuine terrorist.Analysts both sympathetic and skeptical have concluded that the Ergenekon investigations are intended mainly to purge the ranks of Turkey’s enduring secular establishment – in the courts, the schools, local government, and the military – and consolidate power for the Islamists in Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP)."

On the global Environmental Performance Index recently released by the U.S. universities Columbia and Yale, Turkey ranked pretty much right-smack-dab in the middle. Turkey Coup-Plot Raids Spark Fears of Military Reprisal - TIME

"In Turkey, a Showdown Between the Government and Military
By Pelin Turgut / Istanbul

On a quiet morning two years ago, residents of the Danish town of Jyderup awoke to an unusual sight: a military tank driving down their main street. The tank baffled the Danes at first, but then they laughed and cheered and generally acted as if a circus had come to town. A Turkish artist, Koken Ergun, had organized the stunt to make a point: most Westerners have no idea of what it means to wake up to a coup, with tanks rumbling through the streets, TV stations seized and a sense of fear in the air. Yet it is an all too familiar memory in Turkey, which has experienced four coups in the last 60 years carried out by military commanders who see themselves as guardians of the secular order."

Turkey, a country of secular tradition, is currently experiencing political turmoil. The two sides to the political conflict are Turkey's secular establishment (consists of the Kemalist military and judiciary) and mildly Islamist government of Tayyip Erdogan's AKP party (which is a loose coalition of conservatives supported by secretive islamists brotherhoods). Although PM Erdogan has been somewhat supported by the West for being a reformer, he has not shied away from pursuing overtly Islamist policies both domestically and internationally."

Turkey’s position in facing a nuclear Iran | The Daily Caller - Breaking News, Opinion, Research, and Entertainment

"Turkey’s position in facing a nuclear Iran
By Tülin Daloglu 02/24/10 at 12:00 am

Iran’s defiance to cooperate with the world powers over its nuclear program clearly adds to an already dangerous situation. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs sent a clear warning on Tuesday that “time and patience is running out” for Iran to come clean on its nuclear program. But President Obama is right to declare that “the door is still open” for to Iran engage in serious negotiations. So far, both sides have blamed one another for the lack of a breakthrough in talks. Given its ever-increasing profile in the Middle East, Turkey is now trying to break this impasse. The question is, though, whether the current Turkish leadership has the capacity to play the game adequate to Turkey’s significance in the region."

Been there, done that. Political tensions have been rising over the past week in Turkey after a top prosecutor was arrested last week and a number of present and former officers were arrested this week on a charge of plotting to overthrow the Turkish government. The arrests are the outcome of ongoing investigations in the so-called ‘Sledgehammer’ and ‘Ergenekon’ cases, both involving alleged plots to overthrow the government. In the Ergenekon case, numerous arrests have already been made over the past year, but the most recent developments have led to a stepping-up of tensions between the Turkish government and the country’s secular elite – the military and the judiciary."

By Heller McAlpin / February 22, 2010

It’s not often that one laughs out loud while reading a book of literary criticism. In seven delightfully quirky essays that combine travelogue and memoir with criticism, Elif Batuman’s The Possessed takes us on an unconventional odyssey through the world of Russian literature in search of “direct relevance to lived experience, especially to love.”

Batuman, a first-generation Turkish-American, was educated at Harvard and Stanford, where she now teaches part time. What’s refreshing about her writing is her wonderful sense of the absurd and her willingness to venture into out-of-the-way corners – both geographically and intellectually – and to admit when she’s hit a dead end."

Four Seasons Istanbul: an escape to luxury

"Four Seasons Istanbul: an escape to luxury
Just a few steps from the Blue Mosque, Santa Sophia museum and Topkapi Palace, a former prison has been transformed into one of the most prestigious and charming hotels in Istanbul.

Incredible though it sounds, this erstwhile prison, built in 1917, is a place you'd really want to escape to, not from. When you look a little closer, it makes more sense, as nothing has been left to chance when it comes to the delights in store behind the neoclassical façade. The building exterior preserves the original colour and the large, arched windows but the interior has been completely renovated with some of the most interesting architectural details being retained, including the guard towers, the prison governor's office and the marble staircase leading to the courtyard. Ottoman style, complemented with modern touches, predominates in the 54 double rooms and 11 suites, as well as elsewhere in the public areas, which are tastefully decorated with carefully selected artwork."

Washington blames Ankara for trouble in Armenian issue

"Washington blames Ankara for trouble in Armenian issue

MEHMET ALİ BİRAND

The signed historical protocols with Armenia are losing their attractiveness with each passing day. General evaluation by Washington shows that Ankara is to be blamed for the point we arrived at. The Obama administration is very negative about the future of this protocol and the “genocide” resolution.

If we gather evaluations and statements made by those monitoring upper-level authorities in Washington closely in this regard, then a totally different scenario from what we assumed emerges.

The man behind Turkey's strategic depth

"The man behind Turkey's strategic depth
By Caleb Lauer

ISTANBUL - As current Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu describes it, Turkey was a 'wing state' of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during the Cold War, at the edge, protecting the core. The only NATO country, besides Norway, to border the Soviet Union, Turkey was the first place the Truman Doctrine of containing communism was put into practice. This Western allegiance and its military character suited Turkish state elites and so, for 44 years, in exchange for money and arms, Turkey guarded itself and the southeast corner of Europe from the red threat."

Europe may be reluctant to embrace Turkey but the country is well underway to establishing itself as a regional power. As a gateway to the West, it engages with nearby Middle Eastern states, signing free trade agreements with Egypt, Israel, Morocco and Tunisia. It is currently in negotiations with the Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, to make similar arrangements, as it is with Syria. There is even hope that the newfound closeness with secular, moderate Turkey represents a move away from Syria’s controversial alliance with Iran."
