"To what extent will Turkey last?
CÜNEYT ÜLSEVER
Global economic crisis should have put its mark in 2009. The government hitting the road with 4 percent growth estimate had to digest about 4 percent shrinkage, so made a mistake with a 200 percent margin of error. As a matter of fact, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was expected to say at this point, to the masters of the economy “The crisis is not being touched slightly; get lost!” But he did not. Still in the world of “our guys,” this is tolerable. The official unemployment figure is 13.4 percent! And it is more serious among the young, reaching up to 25 percent. Among the OECD countries Turkey follows Spain with the highest unemployment rate. But the agenda is to not be preoccupied with these frightening figures."
