"The difference between a Greek and a Turkish Cypriot
My partner and his family are Turkish Cypriots who live in Brighton, in fact he was born and raised there. His father owns a restaurant in Hove and recently in order to drum up business they held what they termed a ‘Cypriot’ night. This may not seem a big deal, but it concerned me somewhat, because of what it entailed and the reasoning for it. The majority of music played was Greek and the customers were told that the food was Cypriot food (dolma, kofte, baklava etc…) When I queried this I was told that there is another restaurant in the vicinity owned by Turks and that many of the locals had complained about the fact that these others were Turkish and had expressed that they would not be eating there for this reason. Hence my boyfriends father and his partner believed that as ‘Greeks’ were more ‘acceptable’ in their opinion, then ‘Turks’, it was good business not to expose that they themselves are in fact Turkish."
