"The Gaza Strip of Istanbul: Gazi District
Friday, March 30, 2007
People living in the district of Gazi believe 1995 was a ‘Susurluk’ year of the neighborhood, referring to the political and social turmoil stemmed from a car accident in the town of Susurluk in Western part of Turkey. The dwellers in Gazi think they are confined and left alone as the state of ‘being on alert’ still continues here. If a person is living in the Gazi district, there is no job in İstanbul for the one. The four-year-old Sıla pushing her finger on the nose of her doll, says to her mother,” Look mother, I am throwing a tear bomb!” A different kind jurisprudence rules the neighborhood! This is the ‘Gazi Strip’ of İstanbul, in an analogy to the Gaza Strip in Israel.
