Concerns expressed last week by Turkish army commanders that their country's democracy is threatened underscore the importance of today's White House meeting between President Bush and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Those of us who have advocated strong Turkish-U.S. relations understand that Turkey's secular-democratic identity established it as a unique bridge between Mideast and West."
