"European Parliament's report on Turkey: a testimonial of discouragement
Tuesday, September 12, 2006
Sometimes we only remember the European Union when it publishes a report. Moreover, the recollection constantly entails negative connotations.
In June, discussion of a report prepared by European Parliament (EP) Turkey rapporteur Camiel Eurlings, a Christian Democrat, at the EP Foreign Affairs Committee was postponed to September. Meanwhile, more than 500 proposed amendments, amounting to 110 pages, were submitted for the 10-page report. Early last week the report was discussed in the committee and was passed by a majority with serious unfavorable additions. It will be discussed at the EP General Assembly at the end of the month and will probably be passed without any changes. "
