"...The editors in chief of Germany's and Turkey's largest newspapers join forces for a joint editorial that runs simultaneously in the German tabloid Bild newspaper and the Turkish daily Hürriyet and calls for a deepening of friendships between Christians and Muslims. 'These days, people the world over have been helpless witnesses to religiously motivated rage and irreconcilability,' write the editors. 'It looks almost as if the horrible image of a 'clash of civilizations' is coming true.' But the editors argue that there is more that unites Muslim and Christian values than divides them. 'The highest virtues of Muslims and Christians are charity and mercy. Together, we reject all forms of violence against things or even against people. Our peaceful coexistence has long been a self-evident reality: Three million Turks live in Germany as respected citizens. Millions of Germans travel to Turkey and are grateful for the hospitality they receive there.' Now, the editors argue, is a time when this friendship needs to be deepened. 'We appeal to all Muslims and Christians to take part. We call on everyone to respect the feelings of the other and to avoid insults, indignities or perfidy and to instead build an alliance of cultures.'"
